PERTH -- 30 OCTOBER 2017 -- Calabash Solutions was delighted to be part of Bayer's Breakfast symposium for orthoptists in Perth, West Australia. The focus of the presentation by Calabash Solutions was caring for patients with diabetic eye diseases (DED), particularly those with diabetic macular oedema or diabetic retinopathy.
Our message, based on qualitative research with patients and their families, was that patients with DED have a lot to teach us about our implicit biases as healthcare professionals. These patients' complex care needs shine a spotlight on our patient-centred healthcare rhetoric, as well as the strength of our commitment to caring for the person behind the eye disease or chronic condition.
The role of diabetic distress (or diabetic burnout) was highlighted, too.
