PATIENT PRIVACY IN THE AUSTRALIAN HEALTH CARE SECTOR

FIVE THINGS AUSTRALIAN HEALTH CARE WORKERS ABSOLUTELY NEED TO KNOW

· PRIVACY
Last night, Calabash Solutions presented to 80+ optometrists on Patient Privacy and the Australian Health Care Sector.
The main takeaways were:
1. Over the past 12 months, the health care sector reported the highest number of data breaches compared with any other sector in Australia.
2. In the Australian health care sector, human error, rather than malicious or criminal attack, is responsible for most data breaches.
3. Having a secure network is important but it is not a guarantee against a data breach. A data breach can happen without a computer.
4. Ignoring data retention policies puts you at risk.
5. Patients have a right to privacy. They have a right to have their information protected, they have a right to have their information used for the purpose for which it was collected, and they have the right to have their information treated with respect.
6. Health care workers have a legislative responsibility to protect their patients’ personal information.
